This is a non medical hypnotherapy where the session is tailored to the client’s requirements, and the client is considered to be a co-therapist.
In a suitable relaxed state the client’s ability to explore and heal is directed by the client themselves, and a wonderful sense of completion and release normally results.
Where the different types of hypnotherapy that we use differ so greatly, is the way in which they seek to help to deal with the problem.
Analytical hypnotherapy works on the basis that every symptom has a cause, in the same way that the term 'cause-and-effect' works in other areas of life. Analytical hypnotherapy looks at the root cause of the problem. This system is based on the findings of Milton Erickson and the Analytical Hypnotherapy techniques of Dr R D Longacre
Direct Suggestion hypnotherapy works on the symptom, seeking to relieve the symptom thereby giving the client a chance to change and heal as they see fit.
Part Therapy hypnotherapy is an effective and simple tool similar Ego State Therapy that most main stream psychologists will be familiar with. The Parts that control the clients behaviors are addressed separately with the hypnotherapist acting as a mediator. The parts comet o a successful resolution of the matter being addressed, and re then re integrated in harmony with the client. This technique is based on the teachings of Charles Tebbetts and Roy Hunter.
Hypnotherapy can be used for: Stress management, Insomnia, Drug addictions, Phobias, Motivation, Mental and Emotional blocks, Childhood issues and abuse, Weight loss and most other situations where mental and emotional understanding affects physical performance.
Following is a brief synopsis of common issues that people have resolved through hypnosis.
Hypnosis and smoking:
Using hypnosis to assist people to stop smoking is a very effective form of addictive behavior cessation therapy. Over recent years exceptionally effective techniques have been developed to specifically assist people to break the unique repetitive smoking behaviour patterns. This typically is achieved in one session. On occasion two sessions have been required. It is dependent on the client’s requirements.
Hypnosis and Weight loss or Gain:
A series of six sessions is recommended spanning at least six months. The sub conscious motivators are addressed and a new set of sub conscious goals is developed in conjunction with the client to achieve and maintain their desired weight. This is a natural process and can take time. A healthier eating plan suggestion pack as well as an exercise pack can be included in the therapy; even personal training can be included depending on the client’s budget and requirements.
Hypnosis and Depression:
A very common psychological experience based on repressed and misunderstood anger. The root causes are explored, understood and Re-framed. This can take between one and three sessions.
Hypnosis and Insomnia:
The main cause of Insomnia today is stress. Stress is a chemical survival response in the body that is triggered by brain speed. Hypnosis is used to help the client prioritize their thoughts and slow their thinking process down when they wish to go to sleep. This can normally be addressed in one session.
Hypnosis and compulsive behaviours (addictions):
As with smoking, compulsive behaviours are triggered and re enforced by repetitive behavioural patterns. The chemical component of a drug addiction can take time to overcome, but with the psychological motivator re framed it is that much easier. We suggest that hypnosis is used in conjunction with other rehabilitation techniques as well as mutually supportive associations like Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous.
The typical hypnosis session
The first session consists of an in depth questionnaire, pre-induction discussion, and finally a trance induction during which the reasons for the consultation are addressed, and where required, foundations are laid for possible future sessions.
The next sessions (if required) typically explore the client’s sub conscious motivations for various behaviours as well as identifying suitable solutions or resolutions. A total of between two and three sessions is usual.
As the approach I use is called Client Centered Hypnotherapy, the whole hypnosis session is sixty to ninety minutes long, and follows the following pattern;
- Intake form and detailed questionnaire
This serves to create rapport with the client, and helps the therapist to start to build a subconscious psychological profile of the client so that the therapist can target specific subconscious triggers that are constantly re-enforcing the client’s repetitive behaviour pattern.
- Hypnotic Induction
A simple process whereby a state of mild hypnosis is induced in the client. This involves the client sitting comfortably in a therapy room, relaxing and allowing the therapist to talk them down into a state or trance. The client’s brain wave function moves from Beta to Alpha where it stays for the duration of the therapy.
At all times is the client aware of what is happening and can converse verbally or using idiomotor responses.
- Trance Work
A Resource Anchor is established for the client for use in the session and for future use. The sub conscious and or psychological motivators identified in the questionnaire are re-framed in accordance with the client’s request and comfort level.
Future integration is done at this stage.
- Trance Termination
Once the re framing and future integrating has been completed, the trance is terminated. Post hypnotic suggestions as per client’s request.
IMPORTANT - at all times the client is conscious of what is happening, and what is discussed between client and therapist is confidential.
